Doctors play an essential role in people’s lives, providing critical medical care and expert guidance. They must have a deep understanding of the human body, as well as be up-to-date on the latest medical advancements and treatments to ensure accurate diagnoses. The first of several Mancunian-born actors to take on the role, Eccleston delivered an outstanding performance. He balanced the irascible, almost mystical qualities of his character with a deep compassion for the suffering of those he encountered throughout his adventures in the TARDIS. He also commanded a fine double act with Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler, and his heartfelt farewell to the Time Lord in “The Parting of the Ways” is one for the ages.
Patrick Troughton’s portrayal of the irascible but ultimately good-hearted Doctor set the tone for subsequent incarnations of the Time Lord, with his indignant retorts and puckish retreats often followed by grave proclamations of doom. He is perhaps best remembered for his work in the short-lived spin-off series “The Quatermass Experiment” and his audio adventures, though he was an undeniably important part of the original run of “Doctor Who.”
