Approximately 3.5 billion hectares of forests around the world become annual fire routes that cause potential greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, there are several important aspects that need to be understood regarding forest fires and their relationship to climate change. The main causes of forest fires include human activities and natural processes. Deforestation activities, as well as land clearing for agriculture and plantations, often trigger uncontrolled fires. In Indonesia, for example, the use of fire to clear agricultural land is a common practice. On the other hand, extreme weather conditions, such as prolonged drought caused by climate change, increase the risk of forest fires. Rising global temperatures increase the volatility of natural fuels, such as leaves and wood, which burn more easily. The impacts of forest fires are extensive and complex. First, carbon dioxide emissions resulting from fires contribute to global warming. In recent years, forest fires in the Amazon and Australia have created an alarming spike in emissions, affecting air quality and public health. In addition, the destruction of natural habitats due to fires causes a decline in wildlife populations, which disrupts the balance of the ecosystem. In facing this challenge, forest fire mitigation becomes very important. Various approaches can be taken; one of which is the implementation of sustainable forest management policies. Through reforestation and land restoration, ecosystems can be restored to reduce the risk of future fires. In addition, public education regarding safe fire practices, as well as forest monitoring technology such as satellites, can help detect and prevent fires before they spread. International cooperation is also key in dealing with global forest fires. International climate negotiations, such as the Paris Agreement, emphasize the importance of collaboration between countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Countries are expected to take decisive action to address forest fires and the impacts of climate change. Opportunities to share technology and knowledge between developed and developing countries are essential for developing effective adaptation strategies. It is also important to pay attention to the role of local and traditional communities in forest management. Many tribes and communities have traditional knowledge that can help protect forests and reduce the risk of fire. Empowering local communities through training and outreach can give them the ability to contribute to forest conservation. By understanding the increasing behavior of forest fires due to climate change, sustainable solutions can be designed. Investing in research to understand fire patterns and climate impacts is critical. Only with collaborative efforts can we reduce the impact of forest fires and slowly restore the health of our global ecosystem.
